About the Drill
A common tool in a mechanical workshop, the electric drill was invented by Arthur James Arnot in 1889 as a means to drill through solid rock. It was later adapted by the German brothers Wilhelm and Carl Fein to be handheld and portable. In 1917, Black & Decker patented a trigger-like switch, which was mounted on a pistol-grip handle to turn the electric drill on & off and this method is still used. Other non-portable drills have been produced with drills like the drill press and machine drilling used to drill objects at an industrial level.
An electric drill is a hand held, portable machine that uses a drill bit to drill through a material. The drill bit is separate to the electric drill and is attached through a keyless chuck. A trigger switch is used to activate the drill, usually with a variable speed trigger, meaning the tighter one presses, the faster the drill bit would spin. The electric motor also has a clutch, allow the machine to change the torque, allowing for more faster or lower speed.
